چکیده

The variability of wood properties is an important issue in the utilisation of wood and fibre. Over recent decades there has been increased emphasis on intensively managed, short rotation, plantation forestry, that produces larger proportions of so-called juvenile or core wood. This situation seems to have been aggravated by the shift to establishing forests on high-fertility farm sites, and earlier harvest ages, further increasing variability and lowering wood quality. The exact causes of the increased variability are not well known. It is well recognised that researchers and foresters need tools incorporating models of wood properties and that models of tree growth and wood quality must be linked to allow realistic representation of the variation in wood properties in response to environmental factors and management practices. By attempting to use crown growth to predict wood properties it is intended to explain well known patterns of variation in wood properties, such as: the change from juvenile wood, with wide rings and low density; to mature wood, with narrow rings and high density. Three hypotheses relating crown and stem growth are to be tested using crown and stem data from a single intensively measured tree, summarising research carried out for a M.Sc. thesis (Pont 2003). The hypotheses are based on the theories of: Pressler (in Assmann 1970), Larson (1962 and 1969), and the pipe model theory (Shinozaki et al. 1964) respectively: Stem ring area increment at a level on the stem is proportional to the mass of foliage above. Ring basic density at a level on the stem is proportional to the amount and proximity of foliage above. Stem sapwood area at a level on the stem is proportional to the mass of foliage above.

Leaf Area Index, Biomass Carbon and Growth Rate of Radiata Pine Genetic Types and Relationships with LiDAR

Relationships between discrete-return light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data and radiata pine leaf area index (LAI), stem volume, above ground carbon, and carbon sequestration were developed using 10 plots with directly measured biomass and leaf area data, and 36 plots with modelled carbon data. The plots included a range of genetic types established on northand south-facing aspects. Modelled...

Variation in biomass distribution and nutrient content in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) clones having contrasting crown architecture and growth efficiency

Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is well adapted across an extensive range of sites, is responsive to silvicultural treatments, and has undergone genetic improvement through traditional tree breeding programs, with selection based primarily on rapid growth and disease resistance. Loblolly pine clones with contrasting crown architecture provide an opportunity to better understand the mechanistic r...

Assessing the Health of Pinus Radiata Plantations Using Remote Sensing Data and Decision Tree Analysis

Forest health monitoring is essential to sustainable management of Pinus radiata D. Don plantations. Conventional survey techniques such as aerial sketch mapping are qualitative and subjective, their effectiveness depending on the skill of the surveyor. In contrast, digital remote sensing has the potential to provide quantitative and objective data on the location, extent, and severity of crown...

Clonal variation in crown structure, absorbed photosynthetically active radiation and growth of loblolly pine and slash pine.

Crown structure, absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and growth were analyzed in 300 replicated loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliotti) clones to: (1) quantify genetic variation in crown structural traits, growth and APAR at the species, family and clonal levels; and (2) estimate within-family genetic and environmental influences on measu...

Influence of Tree Age on the Chemical Composition of Radiata Pine

The distribution of extractives, lignin, and carbohydrates in radiata pine and their variation with tree age are reviewed. Extractives, their nature, and amount depend on the heartwood content of the tree, and thus upon wood age. Lignin decreases in the pith-to-bark sequence; pentosans content decreases over the first 10-15 growth rings from the pith, after which it is approximately constant. C...
